Challenger Adaptive Baseball

San Francisco Little League's Challenger Division is an adaptive baseball program for children or youth over five years old (as of September 1, 2025) and young adults with physical or intellectual challenges, designed to allow them to participate in the sport in a flexible and fun way. SFLL will be fielding teams for both kids+younger teens, and older teens+young adults in Spring 2026.

Athletes learn the basics of baseball and how to play as part of a team.  Games are non-competitive with full participation by all: every player takes a turn at bat every inning, and always gets on base and gets to advance around the bases. There are no outs, no one keeps score, and everyone has a great time for one to two hours, once a week on Sunday afternoons.

San Francisco Little League provides each player a uniform similar to those of other Little League teams. Most importantly—everyone has a great time!

GAMES & PRACTICES

The Challenger season runs from mid-March to mid-June, and includes about ten games on Sunday afternoons.  Home games are played at either Riordan High School or at SFLL's fields on Treasure Island.  Home games are interspersed with away games with Challenger teams in Marin, Oakland and on the Peninsula.

We also offer several supplemental events, such as group attendance at Giants games, and an end-of-season "Jamboree" in June.  Most years, the San Francisco Giants have graciously invited our kids to attend a "clinic" hosted by members of the Giants' team, always a highlight.

About Our Coaches

SFLL's network of volunteers come together with a common purpose and goal: to provide a positive and supportive baseball experience for all SFLL players. Parents and coaches and occasionally players from our other divisions provide support and as much (or little) assistance as each Challenger athlete wants or needs to participate to the best of their ability and enjoy the game.

Volunteers are the backbone of our program and we are always looking for more volunteers.  SFLL provides our volunteer coaches with a curriculum of activities focused on fun, fitness, and fundamentals that can be implemented during practices and games.  We also offer coaches a robust training program including in-person coaching clinics, Positive Coaching Alliance training, and more.

We know first-hand that volunteering will be a fun and easy way to contribute to a quality baseball experience for all.  Simply put, the more involved you are, the more fun both you and your child will have!  Learn more about volunteering.

Equipment

SFLL will provide each team with the equipment necessary for games and practices.  Equipment that will be provided to each team includes helmets, bats, balls, and a uniform shirt and hat for each player. Items that typically need to be purchased by the parent include a glove, baseball/softball pants, and cleats. Some parents may also choose to purchase a helmet and/or bat for their child to use.

SFLL offers equipment assistant to any family in need.  Contact your player agent if you need help getting equipment for your player.

Registration Fees & Financial Aid

Challenger Division: $100
REGISTRATION FOR OUR CHALLENGER DIVISIONS WILL OPEN ON NOVEMBER 3, 2025.

SFLL offers financial aid to any eligible player through our Fee Waivers program. Low income residents, children who are unhoused/Homeless, or families who participate in any of the San Francisco Human Services Agency (H.S.A.) administered programs such as MediCal, CalWORKS, Food Stamp, Public Housing Authority, or Foster Care, qualify for a 100% Fee Waiver. Even families who are not eligible for one of these programs but still need financial support can request a Fee Waiver.

Families can request financial aid/Fee Waivers easily and quickly during the registration process and the response is immediate. Aid is offered for all our programs and divisions, including Tee Ball, Baseball, Softball and Challenger ball. No applicant will be turned away for lack of funds.

Fee Waivers are made possible through registration fees and thanks to the generous support of our donors and sponsors.
